We are ramping up for the 2018 season. We hope that some of you are playing golf in warmer climates. It is time for all of us to begin planning
for the 2018 Free State Golf season. The 2018 schedule is also here. The dues are still $60 and your check should be made
out to Free State Seniors and sent to: Free State Seniors, 2052 Deer Park Road, Finksburg, MD 21048.
In October the Free State Seniors completed their 47th year and we can begin looking forward to 2018. You can show your commitment for 2018 by renewing your membership.
Please send your check as soon as possible to renew your membership. Your prompt response will enable us to plan for next season. I would like to thank all those who participated in our golf schedule in 2017, thanks for playing. If you did not play, I hope you will be able to play in 2018. I feel we have real good schedule in 2018 and I am already looking forward to April 23 at Cattail Creek CC.
In 2012 the Free State Board of Directors established a Super Seniors flight in all our tournaments. This means that any member who has reached age 71 and his age and handicap added together total 90 or more will play from the menís forward or senior tees. The Board hopes this decision will encourage some of our older members to continue playing in our tournaments.
I am sure that this Board will represent you well. We all should thank departing Board members, Tom Tarpley and Harvey Lee for their service to the Free State Seniors. I would also like to thank Tom Kline, Sparrows Point CC, for serving as our president this past year and for his service and dedication to the Free State Seniors. Gary Kramer, U of Maryland GC has been elected president for 2018. I look forward to working with Gary and I am sure he will do a good job.
This year we will also have an ex offico member of the Board, Ed Baur, Piney Branch has agreed to take over the duties of maintaining the Free State Seniors web site. Ed has a great deal of experience in this area and will do a great job.
At this point I would be remiss if I did not recognize Tom Tarpley for his service to the Free State Seniors, Tom has maintained the Free State web site since its inception and for this we are very grateful, during this time Tom has also severed 12 years on the Free State Board, holding many offices, including president in 2005. Tom has also taken many pictures at our tournaments that appear each month on the web site. In 2008 Tom was awarded the honor of Distinguished Senior by the Free State Seniors, joining a select group to receive this honor.
The Potomac Challenge was held at Norbeck Country Club in October. The Free State Team lost by a score of 18 to 12. I would like to thank the players on the Free State Team for representing us well in these matches.
The Free State Seniors Match Play Championship played in honor of Wally Engle was won by the team from the Prospect Bay Country Club, they beat the team from the Manor Country Club in the final match. Congratulations to Prospect Bay Country Club and the members of their team. I would like to thank all the players who played for their clubs during the season, these matches are a lot of fun and great competition.
