On Monday, May 23, the Free State Seniors Golf Association will play their monthly tournament at Eagle's Nest Country Club in Phoenix, Maryland. This will be the nineth time we have played Eagle's Nest, the last time being in 2015.

The championship golf course, known as Eagle's Nest for the property's namesake on the Maryland Historical Registry, opened in 1971 under the direction of designer Geoffrey Cornish. Located near the Loch Raven Watershed, private country club featuring an outstanding scenic location with sweeping views of Loch Raven reservoir. The 18-hole golf course offers a rustic, rural splendor that is a serene hideaway only minutes from the beltway.

Majestic dawn redwoods and sycamores frame the landscape, accented by streams, ponds and bunkers that challenge all levels of golfers. Penn A-1 bent grass provides consistently smooth, fast greens to complement lush bent grass fairways and bluegrass roughs. Dawn Redwoods are among the many things that make Eagle's Nest Country Club unique. Eagle's Nest is home to about 75 Dawn Redwoods, technically known as metasequoia, one of the largest single collections outside of China. Dawn Redwoods were once prevalent throughout the Northern Hemisphere but were thought to have become extinct. Besides being somewhat rare, the Dawn Redwood is unique, as it's the only deciduous sequoia; that is, the only one that loses its needles like most trees with leaves. And the trees are regenerative, meaning they'll grow back if cut down. Although they're approaching a half-century old, the Dawn Sequoias were not the first trees planted at Eagle's Nest. That honor goes to the pine tree on the left-hand side of the 5th hole at the bend, planted on April 4, 1970.

The Free State Seniors Golf Association hopes that you will join us on Monday, May 23 at Eagle's Nest Country Club. Your tournament fees will include range balls, golf, cart, prizes, and dinner. We hope to see you there!
