2011 FREE STATE SENIORS

MATCH  PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

WALLY ENGLE MEMORIAL

General:        This championship is sponsored annually by the Free State Seniors Golf Association of Maryland. There is no entry fee requirement. This event is open to all clubs in Maryland who have members in the Free State Seniors Golf Association. Participants must be age 55, and must be members of the Free State Seniors or on the waiting list to join the Association.  If a golfer who was on the waiting list to join the Association declined membership when it was offered, that golfer is not eligible to participate.

Competition:   A Free State member designated at each club will captain, organize and schedule by phone or email all matches as to time and day of the week.  The team captain should contact Bill Matton to provide name, phone number and e-mail address.  Teams consist of 4 players and the lowest indexed players at each site must play each other. The highest seeded team will be the home team in each match, with #1 being the highest seeded.  Scoring will be 18 point match play Nassau competition. There are 9 points to be determined at each location as follows:

                        #1 vs #1                       3 points                                    #3 vs #3                       3 points

                        #2 vs #2                       3 points                        #4 vs #4                       3 points

                        #1 & #2 vs #1 & #2     3 points                        #3 & #4 vs #3 & #4     3 points

                                                            9 points                                                            9 points

In the singles matches, the higher-handicapped player receives the full difference in Course handicap between the two players; the lower-handicapped player plays at scratch.  In the four-ball matches, the Course Handicap of all four players is reduced by the Course Handicap of the player with the lowest handicap, who then plays at scratch.  Each of the other players is allowed 100% of the difference

.

Tied matches (9 to 9) will be decided by the results of the #1 match played at the home site or if still tied, reverting to the #2 match, etc. The winning team is responsible for contacting Bill Matton at 410-956-4815 or billmatton@msn.com with the results.

Schedule:         All matches must be played by the time listed on the schedule.  As you can see by the schedule you have a month in which to play each match. The team failing to field a team on the final date shall forfeit the match.  The host Club shall establish the date and time of the match.  Flexibility and consideration of the visiting club should be utilized in the spirit of good sportsmanship.  The courtesy of a riding cart for the visiting team is customary and appreciated.

Note:  It is not mandatory that #1 and #2 players and #3 and #4 play their matches on the same day. However, the matches must be played in the time span designated on the schedule sheet and no player can play twice in a match against a club should the matches at each site be played on different days.

Rules:              USGA rules will govern play, unless modified by local rules. Play should be conducted from the tees nearest to 6100 yards.  Unresolved disputes will be referred to Bill Matton with final appeal to the FSSGAM Executive Secretary, whose decision will be considered final.

Gentlemen,

Heartiest congratulations to Crofton Country Club, captained by our President Mike Fitzgibbons, for their win over Cattail Creek Thursday by a score of 11.5 to 6.5.  After receiving a bye in the first round Crofton prevailed in 4 matches to take the title.  Attached is a completed copy of the draw showing all results and also a picture of the plaque Crofton will be presented to display at their club for the next year.

On behalf of the board, many thanks to all of you who took on the leadership of your team and ensured we completed the event on schedule.  For those of you who might have thought scheduling might have been easier if you had more players please sign up more members.  We have no waiting list now and I’m pretty sure all clubs represented in the event have more than 4 seniors at their club.

Bill Matton
